5 Children's Ministry Ideas for Christmas

Christmas will be here before we know it. If you haven't already started planning out your Christmas services and events, now is the time to begin.

Christmas is a great time to reach and disciple kids and their parents.

Here are 5 children's ministry ideas for Christmas.

Have Christmas crafts that families can decorate together after your Christmas service.

Here's an idea for this. You can purchase wooden Christmas ornaments online for a good price. Set up the ornament crafts on tables. Provide markers, glitter, etc. that families can use to decorate their ornament. Families enjoy doing this together and will put the ornament on their Christmas tree at home.

Have a family Christmas experience. Families are looking for opportunities to make memories together during the Christmas season. This is a service that is geared for children and their parents. I hosted a Christmas experience called "Who's This All About?" It was a Whoville theme and we had Christmas games, carols, music, skits, etc. during the experience. I hosted it on a Friday night and over 4,000 kids and parents attended.

You can get the Christmas family experience for your church. It includes all of the skit scripts, game instructions, etc. You can get it at this link.

Here's another idea that families love. Have Christmas cookies and hot chocolate after the service. This is a great opportunity to engage guest families in short conversations.

Provide Christmas bags with activities for the children. I have found that Christmas is a time when families want to worship together. But it can be a challenge for children to sit still and be quiet for an extended period of time. Especially younger children. You can help families with this by having Christmas bags available with coloring pages, puzzles, activity pages, etc.

Snow. If you live in an area where you get a lot of snow, this may not be as appealing. But if you live in an area that gets a little or no snow each year, this can be a draw for families. You can set up snow machines in key areas to create "snow" that kids and families will enjoy. You can purchase snow machines online for a reasonable price (they start at around $99).

*Bonus ideas that kids and families love:

  • living nativity

  • candlelight service

  • Christmas photo spots for families

  • Christmas characters in costumes
